When I receive an inquiry for a newborn session, my first question is: “Will it be at your house or would you like options for a studio?”

Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer. Each location offers something special. The key is knowing which environment feels right for you, and causes the least amount of stress.

At-Home Sessions

Here are some pros for a newborn session at-home:

  • No need to rush out the door
  • Your fur babies can join
  • Sessions fell relaxed – the baby has everything they need
  • Capture real, warm moments of taking care of the baby

Here are some cons for a newborn session at-home:

  • The natural light can be more difficult to work with based on your home’s windows and layout
  • It adds pressure to have the home clean

Studio Sessions

Here are some pros for a newborn session at a studio:

  • No need to clean your home
  • Consistent lighting
  • Calm environment

Here are some cons for a newborn session at a studio:

  • The space is not personal
  • More posing and directions from photographer

My approach when photographing a newborn is simple. The baby leads. I do not want to force the perfect photograph, stress the parents, or rush through the session. If the baby needs a break, that is okay.

Whether it’s at home or a studio, each one offers a beautiful way to document this season of life. These moments go by so quickly, the photos are what freeze time.
